As Michael races toward Joan and Le Comte St. Germain, Le Comte wants to know if Joan can hear the stones in The Space Between Section 39. This is the moment Le Comte realizes that Joan is telling the truth about not being Claire’s daughter.
Le Comte has been sure up to this point that Joan is Claire’s daughter. Her red hair likely makes it clear that she could be Jamie’s daughter, and Le Comte would have no reason to believe that Claire didn’t stick around in the past the whole time. Why would he think Claire would have time traveled back to her own time for 20 years? Well, Le Comte is about to find out a few things.
Breaking down The Space Between Section 39
It all starts with a simple question. “Do you hear anything?” Le Comte St. Germain wants to know if Joan can hear a buzzing sound. He knows that she should hear something if she can time travel, and he even goes into the details of time travel. There are stones, and they are open around the time of the fire and sun feasts.
Le Comte St. Germain can hear them, but Joan can’t. All she can hear are footsteps, but it seems that Le Comte can’t hear them. I wonder if it’s because of the buzzing of the stones that Le Comte can’t hear them. What is clear, though, is that there is another portal in France, and that explains how easy it was for Master Raymond to get away.
As Le Comte realizes that Joan definitely can’t hear the stones, he starts to realize that maybe she was telling the truth about not being Claire’s daughter. If she was Claire’s daughter, she would be able to hear the stones, no?
As for Joan, she has no idea where she is. She’s scared, and she’s not sure who the footsteps belong to. One thing that comforts her is the sight of the Virgin Mary statue as the torch shines on it. She knows that the fairies wouldn’t allow for that statue to be there, so she feels a little safer in the situation. Christ is with her.
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
This is another chapter that would be needed if The Space Between is ever adapted. It brings up another portal, which is great for Outlander fans. One thing that would need to be changed is the mention of when the portal opens, because the world of the TV series hasn’t brought in that rule. People can seem to travel whenever they want.
We would also need to see the realization that Joan can’t hear the stones. We need to see Le Comte realize that she isn’t Claire’s daughter. This changes everything for him, but he still needs to press forward. He needs to make sure.
