The coach comes to a stop in The Space Between Section 38. Michael has to continue the rest of the search on foot.
However, he doesn’t know what to expect, and he does use his brain about that. He’s quick to get the coach driver to alert others, because they could need the safety of numbers.
Breaking down The Space Between Section 38
The coach hasn’t even had a chance to stop before Michael jumps out of it. His mind is focused on getting to Joan and saving her, but he needs to make sure others know what is going on. He wants his coach driver to tell the other coach driver that Le Comte is up to something. I’m sure that coach driver knows, but, well, it’s best to alert him anyway.
What Michael doesn’t know is what Le Comte actually wants with Joan. He has no idea where they are going or what is going on, but he knows that Joan’s life could be at risk. He doesn’t know her as well as he could, but he knows that he needs to protect her. Michael cannot have another loss on his hands.
When he sees a flash of Joan’s skin, he knows that he is at least going in the right direction. However, there is a sudden green fire that explodes, and all Michael can do is follow the way that Joan has gone. He tries to call out to her but can’t.
I do have to wonder why Michael didn’t wait for the backup of the coach drivers, though. That would have made a bit more sense, but then Michael isn’t a soldier and he only has saving Joan on his mind.
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
As with the other sections, there is no way that this could be skipped if The Space Between was adapted. This is the drama of the story, and we need to see the chase. It’s important to see Michael step into action, showing him as a true hero, even if he doesn’t really know what’s going on.
The entire scene could even play out. There’s no need to worry about Michael’s thoughts being shown on the screen, as it’s all in the action and in the scenery around them. We know the fear that Michael is going to fear, because we know he doesn’t know who Le Comte St. Germain is or what to expect from him.
