Le Comte St. Germain has questions for Joan in The Space Between Section 37. Here's our breakdown of the chapter.

We go back to Le Comte St. Germain’s carriage in The Space Between Section 37. This part is from Joan’s point of view.

Joan is a feisty character, and she is just trying to stay alive. At the same time, she is trying to figure out who or what Le Comte is. One thing is for certain, she has gained some of the fight that Laoghaire has always had. I know a lot of people won’t like me saying that, but Laoghaire is also a feisty character.

Breaking down The Space Between Section 37

We go back to Le Comte St. Germain’s carriage, and he wants to know why Joan told him not to do it. Joan tries to tell him that she is not Claire’s daughter and that it was a misunderstanding, but he clearly does not believe her. She even tells him that the “voices” told her to tell him, but he doesn’t seem to believe that either.

Joan doesn’t like this man, and I can’t really blame her. He’s literally abducted her. There were so many better ways to get her to go with him, and she probably would have done had he asked her nicely and given her a reason to go.

She does start to wonder if Le Comte is one of the “Auld Ones,” and that leads to her thinking about Claire. She doesn’t know Claire all that well, but she does believe that the woman was one of the Auld Ones — just one that is nice. I guess that Laoghaire has mentioned stuff, and maybe others have since Claire was around Lallybroch just before Joan went off to Paris. We have to remember that this short story takes place after the events of Ian Murray’s death.

Joan’s thoughts are stopped in their process, though. There’s a terrible smell on the road, and her thoughts go to that instead.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

We need to see this chapter, but it would be hard for a TV series to adapt all of it. The conversation between Joan and Le Comte would certainly be easy enough to play out. We could have the conversation in Section 35 and this one play out in the same scene.

The part that is tricky is when it involves Joan’s thoughts about Claire. How can we find out that she thinks Claire is one of the Auld Ones, unless she mentions it to Le Comte?
