I almost feel like we are in a part of Outlander where Jamie is racing to save Claire in The Space Between section 36. This time, it’s Michael racing to save Joan.
Poor Joan has not landed in this situation willingly. Her bad French led to some misunderstandings, and now she has a madman who wants something of her. Can Michael get to her in time?
Breaking down The Space Between Section 36
The section is a short one, focusing on Michael racing to catch up to Le Comte St. Germain. He can’t will the carriage to go any faster, but he is losing ground. There are other carriages on the roads, and the dark is setting in. There is a dread within him that he won’t get to Joan in time, and we can feel that dread coming through as he thinks of his options.
He doesn’t have a weapon to fight off Le Comte. All he has is a penknife, and what good is that going to do? He thinks of the story of David vs. Goliath and how David took out something much bigger and stronger than him with a slingshot and a rock. Does he have anything that he can fashion into a slingshot?
One thing that comforts him is Joan’s rosary. He put that in his pocket when he found it on the ground, and all he can do is pray that he makes it to Joan in time.
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
If The Space Between was used for an adaptation, then I could definitely see this being used. I could see the scenes of Michael chasing after Le Comte being grouped together, as we see Michael try to figure out what he could use. He’d probably even talk to himself, so we know exactly what he is thinking. If he doesn’t, I don’t think the scene would have the same weight and comedy to it. C’mon, the penknife?
We need the drama of the chase, so we would also need to see the carriage racing down the road. There has to be something that gets the adrenaline pumping!
