Michael learns that Joan has been abducted in The Space Between section 30. He and Mother Hildegarde are on the case.

We haven’t seen a lot of Mother Hildegarde in this story, but she is there when it counts. This is a woman with a lot of spirit, and we get to see that in this section. Nobody should underestimate her when it comes to her ability to see what’s really going on.

Breaking down The Space Between section 30

We start out with Jared going to see Michael with news that Joan has been abducted from the convent. The nuns need Michael’s help, so he heads straight over, and comes across Mother Hildegarde. As he judges Mother Hildegarde by her age, he questions whether Joan was taken or whether she just left.

There would be no need for Joan to run away if she wanted to leave. This isn’t a cult; Joan is allowed to leave whenever she wants. Plus, if she was going to leave, she would have gone to Michael’s place. He is the only person Joan knows in Paris.

No, Joan was definitely taken. Mother Hildegarde points out that there was a sign of a struggle in the cowshed, so she wants to know if Joan said anything to Michael at their last meeting. Michael shares about the voices that Joan had been hearing, which is a surprise to Mother Hildegarde. She’s confused at why “her mother” didn’t mention anything in the letter that she wrote.

This is where Michael realizes that Joan’s French was so poor that a mistake has been made. He explains that Claire, who wrote the letter, is Joan’s father’s stepmother. With that cleared up, Michael shares that he knows that Claire was once known as La Dame Blanche, and he also knows of a man called Le Comte St. Germain. Hearing that name clearly sends shivers down Mother Hildegarde’s spine. This is getting much more serious!

Could this section be used in a TV series?

Oh yes, this section would need to be used if the short story was used in a TV series. It brings all the drama and the intensity of the story. There is no way around it.

Not only do we get the news that Joan is missing, but we also get to see how Mother Hildegarde takes in all the information that she is being told. She knows that Le Comte St. Germain is supposed to be dead, but it’s likely that she’s heard a few things. This is a woman with her head to the ground, so she has every reason to be worried about this name being mentioned when Joan is missing.

I would love to see Mother Hildegarde and Michael team up to find Joan on the screen. It would be an epic part of the story to play out.
