Michael manages to make it to the convent to speak to Joan in The Space Between section 28. This is when Joan can finally open up about the voices.

I adore this chapter, as we get to see how much Joan and Michael have started to care for each other. I don’t mean in a romantic way, either. They are like family, and they have come to respect and understand one another. Joan opening up to Michael about her voices and Michael just accepting them are clear signs of that.

Breaking down The Space Between section 28

The section picks up inside the convent, with Michael and Joanie able to speak in private for a bit. Joan gives Michael some letters to send to her family, and Michael seems to forget about why he was visiting her. He’s more taken aback by the way she looks in her nun clothing. Joan points out that she is still the same woman.

She uses this chance to tell him that she hears the voices, and Michael simply accepts that. He doesn’t doubt her for a second, and he is more concerned about whether the voices told Joan to become a nun. She admits that they didn’t, but she thought this was the best way to get some sort of control over them.

Now she can open up a little more about the voices, sharing that she’s heard the voices tell her to tell two men “not to do it,” and one of those men was Charles Pepin, so Joan thinks that Michael can help to pass on this message. Joan is sure that the voices really want her to step in, and she’s already told the second man, who she has found out is Le Comte St. Germain.

The voices aren’t clear in what these men aren’t supposed to do, though. She also doesn’t know if it’s the same thing. Of course, we know a lot more, and so does Michael. I was really surprised Michael didn’t bring something up in this moment. Considering what Michael just heard from Leonie, I thought he would be more alarmed by Joan bringing up Le Comte St. Germain’s name as well.

As Sister Eustacia comes to end the meeting, Michael decides that he will attend mass ever Sunday. All Joanie has to do is roll her eyes or send him some sort of sign if she would like to talk with him.

Could this section be used in a TV series?

We would definitely need this chapter to be used if The Space Between was ever used in a TV adaptation. It gives us that look at how Joan and Michael’s bond has grown. She has finally felt like she can trust Michael with the truth about her voices.

It just doesn’t make sense why Michael would hide what he knows about Pepin and Le Comte. I guess the show could offer us a look at how Michael’s expression quickly changes. Having this section would help to see how Michael has become protective of Joan, though, and that’s what we need to see.
