Michael never thought a trip to see Leonie would lead to a mission to save Joan in The Space Between section 27. However, it turns out that Leonie knows something about Le Comte.

We get to see Michael step up as a protector in this section. He pushes all questions and thoughts to one side, focusing on a mission to protect Joanie. I love how protective he became of her so quickly. He really will make a great father once it happens for him.

Breaking down The Space Between section 27

The section opens with Michael going to see Leonie, a few days after she jumped into bed with him. When he gets to her house, he finds out that she is ill, but he needs to see her. It turns out that Leonie did try to abort a baby. She confesses that the child is Charles Pepin’s, and he suggested that Leonie acts to make Michael think that it is his child. She will be ruined if people find out that she has had an illegitimate baby, and there’s no way Pepin would stand by her as a married man.

However, the abortion attempt led to a high amount of blood loss. Leonie will make it, but it’s touch and go as to whether the baby will survive. Leonie rushed the process after thinking that Joanie had found out about the pregnancy and wanted to tell Michael about it. It’s clear that Leonie has no idea what type of woman Joanie really is.

As the two continue to talk, Leonie brings up Le Comte St. Germain. Pepin said that Le Comte would protect Leonie. I can’t make much sense about this, because I can’t see what Leonie has to offer Le Comte. The only thing I can think is that it was because Le Comte wanted to know more about Michael, and he saw Leonie as a way in.

One thing that Leonie knows is that Le Comte is after Joanie. Michael rushes off to protect her, first heading back to the engravers to get a rush job done on the chalice. After all, he needs a reason to get into the convent to see Joan. While Sister Eustacia isn’t happy about this, she knows how generous his family has been, so she allows it.

Could this section be used in a TV series?

There’s no way that we couldn’t have this section used. I did say when it came to the part with Leonie in bed with Michael that I wasn’t sure about that, but I take it back. That part needs to be included, because it is a much bigger part of this story. We get to see why she did it here, and it all leads to Michael learning that Joanie isn’t safe.

I would like to see a bit more of this story fleshed out if it was used in a TV series. We’d need to see the conversation between Le Comte and Pepin, and then we could get to know more about how Leonie knows things. This could allow for more tension in the build-up to this reveal, wondering whether Michael will learn the truth before it’s too late.
