The Miss Scarlet season 5 finale brought us someone who could be friend or foe. The Governess made an impression, and I get the feeling it’s not over with her.
During the Miss Scarlet season 5 finale, Eliza found herself threatened. A woman told her to back off and not get involved in an investigation. Well, Eliza didn’t do that, and she turned to Blake with all the information that she had to help solve a crime that involved Russians.
It turned out that the woman was a spy. She works for the British Intelligence Service, and it’s a darker branch than most others have heard of. She certainly seems to work for what will become MI6, and her codename is The Governess.
The Governess would make a great semi-antagonist in Miss Scarlet
I would love to see The Governess return. The British Intelligence Service would surely have ulterior motives for their actions. While they want to keep bad people off the streets, they’re not necessarily focused on the smaller cases. They want to protect the whole nation and the Crown, and that can sometimes go against what Scotland Yard wants.
I get the feeling that it’s not over with The Governess. She could pop up with a case for Eliza, or she could pop up and cause a problem for Eliza and Blake. It’s possible for her to become one of those characters who is sometimes friend and sometimes foe, depending on what the Crown wants.
Plus, having her in the show offers us another independent female who is going against the status quo. She is not a woman of her time, and we need more of these female characters in period dramas. After all, not everyone was happy with being property, not having the right to vote, and virtually having no freedoms in life.
Something to note is that Miss Scarlet season 6 hasn’t been confirmed at the time of writing this. There’s still time for a renewal to come in. We’re not too worried about a renewal just yet.
Miss Scarlet is available to stream on PBS Masterpiece.
