If you haven’t watched Sweet Home Alabama yet, where have you been? The early ‘00s movie is one of the best rom-coms out there, and it certainly made it clear that Reese Witherspoon remained one to watch after her success in Cruel Intentions.

Well, there isn’t much more time left to watch the rom-com on Netflix. It’s one of the movies leaving the streamer at the end of 2025.

Sweet Home Alabama leaves Netflix in December

What’s On Netflix brought the disappointing news, sharing that Sweet Home Alabama will leave Netflix on Monday, Dec. 29. This is at the same time as another great early rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You. You should have until 11:59 p.m. ET/8:59 p.m. PT on the Monday night to watch it, but I’d make a weekend of rom-coms if I were you.

Reese Witherspoon plays Melanie Carmichael, who gets engaged to the wealthy Andrew Hennings. However, there’s an issue. She’s already married, but nobody knows, and so, she has to head to her hometown of Pigeon Creek, Alabama, to get her estranged husband, Jake, to sign the papers.

There is much more to the story, of course. People look down on Melanie for escaping the small town, and Melanie looks down on people for staying in the small town. And it doesn’t help that Andrew’s mother, the Mayor of New York City, isn’t all that impressed with Melanie and is looking for anything to make it clear that she isn’t right for Andrew. After all, she wants her boy to become President of the United States one day!

Why is Sweet Home Alabama leaving Netflix?

This is one of those movies I highly recommend getting on DVD or Digital. As it’s a third-party movie, Netflix doesn’t keep the exclusive rights to it. The movie can jump around streaming platforms, and this current move is likely due to Netflix’s contract to stream it coming to an end.

There isn’t a new home for Sweet Home Alabama just yet. It could end up getting back on Netflix in the coming months, or it could end up on another streaming platform. All this is likely not until January 2026 at the earliest, so the best way to watch is with a copy that you can keep! This is why DVDs aren’t dying out.
