We love to follow the Outlander actors onto new projects. Richard Rankin landed the lead in Rebus back in March 2023. We’ve had to wait a long time to learn when it would premiere for U.S. fans.
There were questions about the fate of Rebus, as Viaplay chose to shut down operations outside of the Nordic countries. Would the series end up not getting to air on the streamer after all?
It looked like it needed a new home. In May 2024, it finally premiered in the UK, but U.S. fans were still left waiting. Well, we finally have a premiere date, and it is still going to be on Viaplay.
Rebus lands a November premiere date on Viaplay
Viaplay announced that Rebus would premiere on Thursday, Nov. 7. All six episodes of the series will be available as a binge-watch, so there’s no need to wait.
The series is based on Ian Rankin’s books, and it is set in present-day Edinburgh. John Rebus has been demoted, and now he finds himself as a psychological crossroads. He doesn’t really understand how to navigate the world as it is now, a world driven by technology.
On top of that, he’s not the greatest person. He’s in a toxic affair with the wife of his former police partner, who is now disabled. His own ex-wife’s new husband has replaced Rebus in his daughter’s life. He wonders if there is still a role for him in the world. Is there even still meaning to the law that he once swore himself to uphold?
Then there’s his ex-soldier brother, who ends up getting messed up in a gang war. The brother steals drugs from a drug dealer in a way to provide for his family. Now Rebus needs to decide whether he should protect his brother or bring justice in the way the law suggests.
This is certainly one for those who want complex characters that you’re not always going to like.
Rebus airs on Viaplay on Thursday, Nov. 7.
