We had started to worry about the future of Rebus. There was a lot against it, especially with Viaplay pulling out of shows outside of the Nordic countries. However, there has been some great news thanks to the UK partners, and I'm so relieved my fears weren't realized.
So far, the great news is in the UK only. What does it mean for the future of the series across the pond? This could depend on distributors.

Rebus season 2 is happening in the UK
Radio Times delivered the excellent news. Richard Rankin will continue to play the iconic John Rebus in the second season of the series. The critical acclaim and high viewership in May 2024 made it clear that the BBC had to greenlight Rebus season 2.
Maybe it also helps that the series scored three awards at the RTS Scotland Awards. It gained Best Drama, Best Writer, and Best Director.

What to expect in Rebus season 2?
The first season ended with some shocking moments for John Rebus personally. One of those involves his brother, Michael, who was going to turn himself in to the police. His wife Chrissie convinces him to go on the run instead, and Cafferty made it clear to Rebus that Michael killed a member of the UDA, and that puts a target on his back.
Rebus will want to protect his brother, but he’ll also need to act within the law. He also needs to make sure he protects his daughter and ex-wife.
At the end of the Rebus season 1 finale, Lockie was shot in front of his house. Rhona turned to Rebus for protection, knowing that she and Sammy could be at risk, and of course, Rebus was going to invite them into his apartment.

Could Rebus season 2 come to the United States?
Now there are questions about whether the second season will get an airing in the U.S. There has been no mention about Viaplay’s involvement in the second season. It is possible that as it’s the distributor of the first season that it will get to keep that right. However, there may be other stipulations involved as it may not be financially involved in the production.
If Viaplay doesn’t get it, other carriers will need to be found. Considering BritBox is the home of a number of other Scottish dramas, including Karen Pirie, that could be a great home for Rebus. PBS Masterpiece and Acorn TV also tend to work well with the British networks, so with some hope, there will be a home somewhere.
Rebus is available to stream on Viaplay.
