What happens to Aegon after Rook's Rest in Fire & Blood?

House of the Dragon fans watched as Aegon fell to the ground with Sunfyre. Does he survive? Let's take a look at Fire & Blood to see how the story is written next.

Things are not looking good for King Aegon II in House of the Dragon. We watched him go down after Vhagar unleashed his fire during the Battle at Rook’s Rest. At the very end, Aegon lay motionless, and it’s unclear whether he will survive or not.

The trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5 doesn’t make it clear if Aegon lives or dies. With nothing being said about death, we can assume he lives but it’s not going to be an easy recovery for him. Let’s take a look at Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin to see the story there.

Just keep in mind that the book story isn’t “accurate.” This is a story told by a Maester who wasn’t even alive at the time. He takes accounts from three people, and those accounts aren’t always accurate. House of the Dragon reminds us that history is always written by the victor.

Aegon is about to suffer in House of the Dragon

If you love seeing Aegon on screen, you may be disappointed about what is likely to come. In Fire & Blood, we’re told that Aegon survives but for a year he is in his rooms. He is often out cold on Milk of the Poppy, which leaves him sleeping for nine hours out of 10.

He’s also in a lot of pain. The Battle at Rook’s Rest left him with a broken hip, multiple broken ribs, and burns all down one side. His armor even melted into his flash on his left arm.

Aegon did recover enough, but he didn’t keep his crown at first. Rhaenyra eventually became Queen of Westeros and sat on the Iron Throne. It’ll be interesting to see if this is where we’ll end Season 2, or if the show will go a little further with Aegon’s fight at Dragonstone and then Rhaenyra losing her crown and Aegon gaining it again.

I don’t want to go too far into Aegon’s story, as there is far more to tell via House of the Dragon first.
