Have you ever wondered how some elements of Outlander filming happen? Sometimes, it’s nice to keep the magic of television as just that. However, there are times that we love to hear about the “funny” moments in filming.
Sophie Skelton has shared a little about the filming process. In particular, she talked about how filming happens at Craigh na Dun and other standing stones to make it look like the characters have gone through them to another time period. The camera keeps rolling, which means the actors need to help make the magic happen.
Sophie Skelton and others run when filming Outlander
Skelton, who plays Brianna on the series, shared that those who have to go through the stones need to help production. As the camera pans around the stones, the actors need to run around, following the camera. By the time the camera gets back to the initial side of the stones, there is nobody there, making it look like the character has traveled through time. They’re just standing on the other side of that stone—maybe we could spot shadows in our next rewatch?
Toward the beginning of Outlander Season 7A, Brianna and Roger have to go back to their own time with their family. Mandy is born with a heart defect and only modern-day surgery can save her. So, they make the difficult decision to leave family behind in the past.
Skelton shared that she, Richard Rankin, and the twins playing Jemmy, Matthew and Andrew, had a lot of fun filming the scene. They would giggle as they ran around the stones, clearly making it a lot of fun for the child actors involved. Considering they are young children, they need to be kept engaged to work well, and this is a great way to do it.
Will it remove the magic of Outlander? Definitely not! It’s a cute story and now we’ll be on the lookout for shadows.
Outlander Season 7B premieres on Friday, Nov. 22 on Starz.
