Ranking the seasons of The Last Kingdom (and the movie, of course!)
The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die: The perfect ending
The movie was announced after Netflix confirmed that The Last Kingdom Season 5 would be the last. The series was always intended to be five seasons as there were 10 books at the time of developing the series. Then the last three books came out, and some of the storylines in the fifth season led to the need for the movie.
We ended up with this major event: an attempt to destroy everything that Alfred, Edward, and then Aethelstan fought to develop. Part of that was Uhtred’s fault as he wanted to remain neutral now that he had Bebbanburg back.
There was a lot going on throughout the movie. I am totally on board with some of the characters not being shown. They weren’t needed for the overall story, and it would have taken away from some of the events that did happen.
Seeing the emotional range of the actors, especially Mark Rowley, in this movie off the back of the fifth season was everything. Now I’m excited to see Rowley in more.
The ambiguous ending was the best way to handle it. We got to see Uhtred have to make a choice, but we’ll never know the choice he makes. And that’s okay, because either one would work. But knowing that he sees everyone he loves in Valhalla together is enough to bring some closure to all the stories.
The Last Kingdom Season 4: Constant questions of loyalty
My all-time favorite season is Season 4. This is the one that has some of the best battle scenes and best storylines. We have that moment that Uhtred finally sees a chance to get his ancestral home back, only to face one of the biggest losses ever. Who didn’t cry as Beocca died? That was a hard one!
Then we had Aethelflaed and Uhtred’s relationship blossom. This had been a long time coming, but it wasn’t meant to be in the end. We also saw Aethelred realize that he had been wrong all this time but have no time to change, reminding us that life is short.
Edward became one of the most hated characters for a while, as well. Oh, and Brida. This was her real turning point to be one of the biggest enemies for Uhtred to face. This season was all about shifting loyalties. The past didn’t matter. It was all about what they were fighting for now.
