Lord John and the Hellfire Club is a very short story that just gives us an insight into who Lord John Grey is. We’ve finished the read-through now, and we’re ready for the next part of Lord John’s story.

We’re not going to wait too long to start Lord John and the Private Matter. The only reason there is a small break is that I want to make sure everyone has a chance to get through the short story and get the book for this read-through.

Lord John and the Private Matter is the first of the full-length novels focused on the character. It was originally going to be a novella, but comes in at 320 pages, making it a novel. It led to Diana Gabaldon landing a deal for two more full-length novels.

When we’ll start Lord John and the Private Matter

We’ll start the read-through on Monday, April 8. This should give people time to get the book, whether on their Kindles, the physical book, or even on audio. I love Audible purely because I get to listen while I walk the dogs!

Lord John and the Private Matter takes place after the events of the Hellfire Club. There is another murder, and there’s also a delicate situation for Lord John to deal with.

Set in 1757 England, we see Lord John Grey attempt to deal with a situation that involves Joseph Trevelyan, his cousin. This is somewhat delicate. At the same time, John needs to get to the bottom of a murder. A fellow soldier was suspected of espionage at the time of his murder. There is some missing military intelligence within all this.

We get to see more of John’s personality throughout this novel. It’s set at a time when Jamie is at Helwater, but he doesn’t show up in the novel at all. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some mentions. We also get a few more pieces of the puzzle as to why John ended up at Ardsmuir.
