Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire getting up the mountain to find Jamie. A young man has Jamie’s rifle, and she asks him where he got it from. He tells her that the owner is dead. Claire needs to find Jamie.

Once she does, Jamie has accepted that he is going to die. It’s clear that he is ready, although he asks Claire to forgive him. Is that to forgive him for accepting death and leaving her behind?

Claire isn’t ready for him to die, though. She finds four wounds, and she keeps thinking about various phrases that have come up in the past. The color blue is on her mind, and she thinks about how Master Raymond said “like the Virgin’s cloak.”

Young Ian wants to get Claire away, seeing that Jamie is dead. When Roger appears, Claire gives them instructions. As Roger touches Jamie, it helps to send a push of energy through to Claire. Claire describes it as a feeling of oxygen.

Claire continues to push life into Jamie. She refuses to allow him to give up, and she keeps thinking to him to hold on. Then at the end, she silently says “help me.” It’s not clear who she is asking for help from, but I get a sense that it’s from the world around her.
