We finally get to the bottom of the conspiracy that Bates and other men were involved in during Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade Chapter 34. We also get the name of the murderer.
I will note that I’ve been writing John’s father’s name as Gerald this whole time, and that’s just the way my mind read the name until this chapter suddenly. His name is Gerard!
Anyway, the plot wraps up in this chapter. We get to see Benedicta back, and John is able to save the day.
Breaking down Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade Chapter 34
It’s some time after John sends the O’Higgins to get Percy. The family is mourning privately, but their mourning is interrupted by the O’Higgins brothers. They are here with a letter for John.
It turns out that Bates gave Mrs. Tomlinson a letter. She passed that onto John, as it details everything that was going on. Bernard Adams (Mr. A?) is a government minister, who recruited Bates and others to steam sensitive information. Adams used blackmail against him, Otway, Jeffords, and Ffoulkes.
The idea was that Adams would get the men arrested and then get away. He believed that the men would be blamed for the theft of documents. Instead, they were charged with a sodomite conspiracy to cover up the theft.
John rushes to Adams’s home, but it’s too late. Adams has gone to meet with Benedicta at a house on Edgeware Road. So, John rushes there in time to find Benedicta with a gun but no Adams. She had blackmailed Gilbert Rigby to get him to confirm that Adams was the one behind the murder of her husband. She wanted Adams to confess and restore Gerard’s name.
Well, it’s not hard to track Adams down. He thought the fortune teller automation was still in Hal’s office. He wanted the money. There’s a chance, but John catches Adams and blinds him in one eye. He can now write his confession.
Could this chapter be adapted into a TV series?
If there was a Lord John Grey series, this chapter is a must. We need to see how the conspiracy ends. We need to know who killed Gerard. There’s also some closure for the Bates storyline. Now it’s a good thing that John helped.
There is no way around not using this chapter. It’s got the action and answers needed to wrap up the story. In fact, there’s no reason not to include it.
