Lord John Grey thinks about Hector in Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade Chapter 25. It then moves onto him catching Percy in bed with someone else.
My heart goes out to John in this chapter. It’s not easy finding out that your love has betrayed you. However, I still think that John rushed into things far too fast with Percy. He barely got to know the man!
I do enjoy the moments of him thinking about Hector, though. It’s hard to know how that relationship would have gone since Hector was killed at the Battle of Culloden. Could they have found a way to make things work?
Breaking down Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade Chapter 25
This chapter certainly makes it clear that when John attaches himself to a person, that attachment remains strong. There is an air of nostalgia in this chapter, and it leads to John thinking about Hector and lying in the grass with him. It’s a beautiful moment for John to remember his first love.
We all put our first loves on a pedestal in life. It’s not surprising that John does too, especially considering how young he was at the time of Culloden.
Later that evening, Herr Hauptmann and Captain Curtis would like John to get his copy of Virgil from his room. Colonel Jeffreys would like it. The three of them head to John’s room. As John opens the door, he is surprised and then slams the door shut.
Curtis and Hauptmann saw everything. Percy is in bed with a German officer, who John realizes is Weber. Curtis believes that John is shocked to find out that Percy is gay, and offers to take over John’s duties to handle the situation. That is the best thing to do and John obliges.
Of course, we know why John is shocked. He’s deeply hurt. Not only has Percy betrayed John with another man, but he has done it in John’s room. It’s clear that he wanted to get caught. Percy was likely so hurt to find out in the previous chapter that John has feelings for another man that he decided to get some sort of revenge.
Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation?
If Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade was adapted into a TV series, we would need to have this chapter. Maybe not all of it, such as the memories of Hector, but we would definitely need the part of John and others walking in on Percy.
This has to be the end for Percy and John. There is no way back from this, both in terms of trust and the fact that others saw Percy in bed with a man. The Grey family will need to do what they can to protect themselves. They’ve already shown that they will go at lengths to protect themselves from scandal, including when it came to John’s actions in the past. So, they will do it again.
