Brienne of Tarth is just one of the inspirational women in period dramas to watch

There are many great women when you start looking at various period dramas and fantasy period shows. You may initially think that women of the past are meek and mild. They have to obey, but that’s not really the case, is it? We just have to look at real history to know that.

So, to mark International Women’s Day, we’re taking a look at the inspirational women in period dramas. These do include some fantasy period dramas as well. After all, we can’t not have Brienne of Tarth on our list.

Just a note, there are no Outlander characters on this list and that was a conscious decision. We’ve already had a post go up together with the inspirational women in this show in particular. There are many more women out there to watch.

Brienne of Tarth – Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones brought some excellent female characters. One of the best things is that they all have their flaws. Cersei is opportunistic, power-hungry, and involved in an incestuous relationship, while Sansa can start of whiny before becoming selfish and hypocritical. Let’s not forget Daenerys, who seemed to lose her way for a while and then went completely mad.

Brienne of Tarth is the one to stand out among them all. She is one of the most loyalist of women. She made a promise to Catlyn Stark, and she made sure that she saw through that promise. It wasn’t the way she expected it to happen, but she made sure it happened.

Brienne faced ridicule all her life from the boys. She was taller and stronger than them, and she wasn’t interested in wearing dresses. She wanted to be a knight, and she stuck to that despite everyone being against her for so long. She persevered, not only showing us her physical strength but her inner strength.
