What to expect for Alicent in House of the Dragon Season 3 based on the book

House of the Dragon Season 2 ended with Alicent going to see Rhaenyra to figure out a way forward in the Dance of the Dragons. What's next for the former Queen Consort in House of the Dragon Season 3?

Alicent found herself wondering if everything was worth it in House of the Dragon Season 2. It doesn’t help that she realized she had made a mistake in translating Viserys’s final words. What is next for the former Queen Consort in House of the Dragon Season 3?

The series is based on the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin. However, there are some changes as some of the blanks are filled in and we see that we can’t always trust what is written about history. After all, history is always written by the victor.

Let’s dive into the book, though. It will give us a rough idea of what’s to come for Alicent in House of the Dragon Season 3.

Alicent opens the gates to Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon

At the end of Season 2, Alicent went to see Rhaenyra for a plan to move forward in peace. It’s time for Rhaenyra to take the Iron Throne, and Alicent will help with that. She promised to open the gates to allow Rhaenyra to walk through.

That is what happens in Fire & Blood, although there is a bit of a fight that takes place. Alicent’s brother, Gwayne, is killed in the fight and Alicent ends up being arrested. Otto and his followers are eventually executed, but Rhaenyra allows Alicent to live in honor of the love that she once had for Viserys.

However, in the book, Alicent isn’t able to live in King’s Landing without poking her nose in the Dance of the Dragons. She wants peace, and for Westeros to be split between Aegon and Rhaenyra. As Rhaenyra makes it clear that Aegon and Aemond lost the right to any fairness due to the deaths of Rhaenyra’s sons, Alicent points out that only illegitimate lives were lost.

Arranging a betrothal for her son in Fire & Blood

Rhaenyra’s reign only lasts for six months, but it comes with devastation for Alicent. Aemond is killed in the fight against Daemon, Daeron is killed in the Second Battle of Tumbleton, and Helaena takes her own life. There is also baby Maegor, Aegon and Helaena’s youngest son, who dies around this time. Alicent curses Rhaenyra, and maybe that curse plays out, as Rhaenyra is killed in Dragonstone thanks to Aegon and Sunfyre.

I think this next part is actually going to take place during House of the Dragon Season 4 rather than Season 3. I suspect that Season 3 will cover Rhaenyra’s time in King’s Landing, and potentially end with her death. That leads to Aegon getting the throne back.

When Aegon returns to the Iron Throne, Alicent is the one to help negotiate a new betrothal. This is to Cassandra Baratheon. Meanwhile, Lord Corlys Velaryon suggests the betrothal of Princess Jaehaera Targaryen to Prince Aegon, Rhaenyra’s son. Alicent isn’t all that happy about it, but she does agree to it.

Eventually, Aegon is killed. Aegon the Younger and Jaehaera Targaryen end up sitting on the Iron Throne, while Alicent spends her final years under house arrest. It brings us to the end of the Dance of the Dragons, and I could see this being how House of the Dragon Season 4 ends.
