Droughtlander suggestions: Tune into The Summer I Turned Pretty

If you're looking for a romance series to get you through Droughtlander, The Summer I Turned Pretty is worth considering.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

The Summer I Turned Pretty is certainly more YA romance than the sort that Outlander is used to, but it’s a great story that involves love, coming of age, and grief. The books by Jenny Han are certainly worth reading, but we’re taking a look at the TV series on Prime Video first.

This is something for those who need cute romance and love triangles. It’s also for those who want to see more inclusivity and diversity in their shows. Prime Video certainly gets it right with the casting of this one, and it helps that the story is written by an Asian-American in the first place.

What is The Summer I Turned Pretty about?

Every summer, Belly heads to Cousins Beach. This year is different. She’s more confident in her body and she’s grown up. She’s no longer the geeky kid who followed everyone else around. And sure enough, the Fisher brothers are noticing.

Belly has always had a crush on Conrad, the eldest of the Fisher boys. This summer, she realizes that there may be something with Jeremiah, though. After all, Conrad is acting distant and moody all the time, while Jeremiah is showing an interest in this 16-year-old Belly.

However, that’s because there is something much bigger going on for Conrad. His mom is sick, again. What happens when Susannah’s secret comes out. Will she fight her cancer again, or is it time for everyone to let her go?

Why watch The Summer I Turned Pretty during Droughtlander

If you want a steamy romance, this is not the series for you during Droughtlander. If you want cute love, The Summer I Turned Pretty is a must. While there is a love triangle, it’s not the stereotypical one. There is a lot more going on that leads to Belly falling for both brothers and having to make choices.

I prefer the storyline with Susannah and Laurel, though. We see these two adult friends who want to see the best for each other. However, Laurel knows Susannah’s secret and has to prepare for the loss of her best friend. It’s not going to be easy, especially when Susannah has always been Laurel’s main cheerleader.

It’s going to be a quick binge for some of Droughtlander. It will make you remember what it was like to be a teenager while also watching characters handle grief in some very real and raw ways.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming on Prime Video.
