Downton Abbey 3 is in the works. In fact, production on the movie has started in the UK. This is great news.
Even better news is that we have a release date. On top of that, we know which characters will return and who is joining the movie in new roles. Do we have a plot yet?
Downton Abbey 3 will be in theaters in 2025
We have a bit of a wait on our hands when it comes to the third movie. While it is currently in production, Downton Abbey 3 won’t be released in theaters until next year.
Get Sept. 12, 2025 in your diary. That’s when you’ll get to see the next instalment from the Crawley family.
Who will return for the third Downton Abbey movie?
According to TVLine, much of the cast from the second movie and the original series will return to the story. We’ll get to see the following:
Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley
Elizabeth McGovern as Cora Crawley
Michelle Dockery as Mary Crawley
Laura Carmichael as Edith Crawley
Jim Carter as Charles Carson
Phyllis Logan as Mrs. Hughes
Robert James-Collier as Thomas Barrow
Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates
Brendon Coyle as John Bates
Allen Leech as Tom Branson
Penelope Wilton as Isobel Crawley
Lesley Nicol as Mrs. Patmore
Sophie McShera as Daisy Parker
Kevin Doyle as Joseph Moseley
Michael Fox as Andy Parker
Raquel Cassidy as Miss Baxter
Harry Hadden-Paton as Bertie Hexham
Goulas Reith as Lord Merton
Dominic West as Guy Dexter
Paul Giamatti as Harold Levinson
As you’ll notice, Maggie Smith hasn’t been mentioned as a returning character. For those who watched Downton Abbey: A New Era that won’t be surprising. If you didn’t see the movies, well, spoilers! The Dowager Countess died at the end of the second movie. It was a heartbreaking moment, and I’m not sure a third movie will work as well without her comedic timing.
Who will join Downton Abbey 3?
There are four new cast members confirmed for the movie at this point. They are:
Joely Richardson
Alessandro Nivola
Simon Russell Beale
Arty Froushan
No character details have been revealed yet. We have no idea what to expect in this next part of the Crawley story. We could imagine that it has Mary taking more control over the household, stepping up in ways that the Dowager Countess did for so many years. That is certainly the way the second movie seemed to leave things off.
