If you're looking for a period drama to check out, it's time to turn to Black Sails. The series is now available on Netflix.
This is a STARZ series first. The good news is that it's not leaving STARZ, so if you have an account there, you can still watch the historical drama. Netflix is just moving back to licensing a lot more content rather than creating its own as much, and this show is part of that process.
The 2014 drama ran for four seasons on the premium cable network. Don't worry about it ending on a cliffhanger. While STARZ does have a bad habit of abruptly canceling shows, this one ended rather than being canceled. It also ended the way the creators wanted, with them being the ones to bring an end instead of the network.
What is Black Sails about?
Of course, before you get into the series, you'll want to know what to expect. This is a show that includes some real figures from history, especially when it comes to pirates. Get ready to meet Blackbeard, Anne Booney, and more.
Set in the early 18th century at the time of the Golden Age of Piracy, the series follows a group of sailors and pirates on the hunt for Spanish gold called Urca de Lima. Captain Flint wants to protect New Providence Island in the West Indies, which pirates threaten as they attack the maritime trade. As Flint takes on a new crew member, he has to figure out who he can trust and the best ways to deal with the situation at hand.
The story itself is a prequel to Treasure Island. There are a few Easter eggs along the way as we see how the storylines develop into what we know from the Robert Louis Stevenson novel.
Black Sails is available to stream on both STARZ and Netflix.
