Le Comte St. Germain learns that Master Raymond is looking for him in The Space Between Section 8. Why would the man want Le Comte?
Le Comte makes his way to Madame Fabienne’s. This is a chance for him to dispose of his dead rats, and we also learn that he has a connection to another character from the Outlander story. A character that he wouldn’t have ever met if it wasn’t for time travel.
Breaking down The Space Between Section 8
The chapter starts with Le Comte making his way to Madame Fabienne, where he is welcomed by Madeleine. Le Comte is strangely fascinated with Madeleine’s womb and the phase of her cycle. As he kisses her hand, she emits a blue light. This is something that always thrills him. This did make me wonder about the blue light. Is she another time traveler? This would certainly suggest so, right?
Le Comte goes to see Madame Fabienne, where he drops off a burlap bag full of dead rats. They are for her snake, Leopold—the rats were killed with poison, so wouldn’t that kill the snake? This is where Le Comte almost messes up. He is so careful in other aspects of life that it surprises me that he almost messes up here. He almost lets her know that he has met her in the past.
I’m surprised that Madame Fabienne doesn’t recognize him then. Wouldn’t she remember meeting a man like him? This bit confuses me a little.
Anyway, Madame Fabienne doesn’t catch on that Le Comte almost messes up in saying that he’s heard where she got the snake from before. She tells the story to him again, sharing that he came from the West Indies and is a spirit intermediary between God and the people.
This reminds him of the afile powder, the death powder, that had been waiting for him when he returned. It has been sent by a woman known as Melisande, and we now learn that she was from Rose Hall in Jamaica. Well, we know this woman as Geillis. It’s funny how time travelers all end up coming together.
This did make me question some of the timeline, though. Geillis has been dead for some time at this point in The Space Between. Did we get told how long he’s had the powder? I didn’t think it was that long ago.
Thoughts move onto Master Raymond, though. It turns out that Master Raymond has been looking for Le Comte as well. This is interesting.
The section ends with Le Comte pulling the last rat out of his pocket. The rat is still alive, and when Le Comte hurls it away in surprise, the snake tries to go after it. The rat gets away, though. This was the rat that Le Comte wasn’t sure was dead at first, and now we find out that the powder could have been the one used on Le Comte by Master Raymond all those decades ago.
Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?
I would fully expect this section to be used if The Space Between was adapted. There is a lot going on here, including the blue light from Madeleine and the discussion of the West Indies. The problem is that the part about Melisande is internalized. I guess we could see that play out in some sort of flashback.
This also pushes the story forward with Master Raymond. We know that Master Raymond is looking for Le Comte, and there has to be a reason for that. What happens when the two time travelers meet again?
