It’s time for Michael to learn more about La Dame Blanche in The Space Between Section 20. While Jared wasn’t there at the time, he did get caught up on everything.
What’s interesting in this chapter is the way that Jared believes Jamie would have stayed in Paris had it not been for the Rising. I think he would have, and it made me wish for a story where Claire and Jamie could have lived in Paris.
Breaking down The Space Between Section 20
We start the section with Jared wondering whether Michael was drunk again. While Michael says that he’s not, he doesn’t have an appetite.
The two men talk about the past and grief. Jared says that the grief isn’t always going to be like this, but isn’t that a lie? Jamie grieved Claire for the whole time they were separated. Jared points out that Jamie would have remained in Paris had it not been for the Jacobite Rising, and Jared quickly that he’s grateful for Michael being there.
While speaking of Claire, Michael once again thinks about the story Claire told everyone. So, she did tell the whole family about her being a time traveler. I honestly don’t remember that happening in the books, so I swear it’s something that either didn’t make the cut or happened off-page. Please someone @ me on Twitter if you know where the conversation happens in the books. It’s really annoying me now.
Michael doesn’t know if to believe Claire. All the siblings are split on whether to believe her or not, but it looks like Michael wants to heed the warning, and so he should.
Michael decides to ask Jared about the comment of Claire being La Dame Blanche, and Jared admits that it was a rumor that Jamie started. This would help to keep Claire safe in Paris because nobody would ever mess with a White Witch!
One thing this chapter does tell me is that Claire and Jamie spent some time with Jared. He certainly got to know Claire!
Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation?
I would definitely love to see this section adapted, and I think it’s needed. Michael gets to learn more about Jamie and Claire’s time in Paris, and he gets some answers about La Dame Blanche comment. If that comes up again, he can be a little more settled in it.
I’d love to see a flashback of a conversation between the Murray siblings as well. I want to see them discuss whether they should believe Claire or not, just because of how far-fetched the story seems.
