Le Comte St. Germain and Michael Murray share a scene in The Space Between Section 19. It’s time for Le Comte’s real story to begin in this short story.

We get to learn a little more about Le Comte’s ability to time travel. We learn a little about the times he’s gone back to, and it’s clear that he has time traveled a few times based on the story. Then it jumps to what is sure to become a bigger part of the short story: Le Comte finds out who Michael reminds him of.

Breaking down The Space Between Section 19

At first, it’s just Le Comte St. Germain in the store of Rosenwald, a goldsmith, who is also a Jew. It’s the latter that Germain isn’t too happy about, and it’s clear that are some antisemitic views. This isn’t surprising for the time period, to be honest. However, Germain needs to get an octofoil salver examined, and it’s when Rosenwald tells Germain that it was made by Paul de Lamerie that Germain realizes his mistake. This one came from 1745, and he stole it from the Duke of Sandringham.

Germain wanted to bring the one he stole from the year 1630. So, this tells us that he has managed to time travel to this time, and it’s clear from the way he thinks that it’s not the only time he’s traveled to. He goes on about how he tries not to sell anything from within the last 100 years, as it would raise too many suspicions.

While he debates what to do, a red-haired man walks in. Germain immediately recognizes him but he can’t figure out why. It’s only when the man — Michael Murray — shares some names that he would like placed on a memorial chalice for Ian Murray. The mention of Claire and Jamie Fraser immediately connects Michael to Jamie. They look a lot alike. It looks like Ellen’s genes run strong.

Rosenwald also recognizes the names. He shares that Claire was known as La Dame Blanche, but that’s something Michael has no knowledge of. Rather than go on about the rumors, Rosenwald moves back onto business. This gives Germain a chance to get out of the shop. It’s clear that this is going to become a bigger part of the story.

Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation?

This would definitely need to be used in a TV adaptation if there was one. There is a lot that connects to the overall short story. Sure, I haven’t read it all in detail, but I do know the basics of the story — I’ve never really cared about spoilers. So, I know that we would need to see Germain and Michael meet, even though they don’t actually know each other or how they are somewhat connected.

I’d also like a bit of Germain as he tries to sell items that he has taken from other time periods. It could be great to have him mutter something under his breath to let us know about his time travel antics. So yes, if The Space Between was adapted, we’d need this section.
