Julia goes into labor in Outlander: Blood of My Blood

The episode opens with Julia’s water breaking, and she’s quickly confined to the dining room, with women coming to help with the delivery of the baby. This is where things quickly takes a turn, as Davina tells everyone that Julia seduced Simon Fraser and tried to seduce Brian. She still doesn’t believe that Simon is the father of the child.

The women originally wanted to support Julia, but they soon turn against her to get the name of the real father of the child. After all, they initially believe that this is the prophecized King of Scotland. The women do end up debating with each other, unsure of whether this is Simon’s child or not. Davina keeps pushing for the women to force Julia to repent, as we get flashbacks of Davina’s time with Simon.

It turns out that Simon consistently raped Davina. She was a maid in Castle Leathers, and she was sentenced to the same treatment of women, as they blamed her for getting pregnant with Simon’s illegitimate son. Of course, this was when there was a wife around, so it was even worse for a mistress around.

Davina realizes that Julia is just an innocent woman in all of this. She just did what she needed to, so that she could protect her child, and now Davina is on her side, and the woman are kicked out.

Simon wants to marry Julia Beauchamp

Believing that this child is going to be the future King of Scotland, Simon Fraser wants to make sure the child is born legitimate. He needs to marry Julia—and why he left it so long, I have to question! Of course, he didn’t expect the baby to be born yet, so it seems that he can do a bit of math.

His plans to marry Julia are thrown off. At first, Davina makes it clear that Julia won’t make it to the kirk. Then Simon brings the priest to Castle Leathers to the birthing room, but Julia is in no position for this. The baby is coming.

This gives us a flashback to Julia giving birth to Claire, with Henry in the room with her. There’s just one midwife with them, and the whole room is filled with love and hope—and painful screams, poor Julia! It’s a sweet moment that is juxtaposed with the arrival of their second child.

At first, the baby is born not making a sound, but Davina is able to bring life into the boy. Yes, it is a baby boy, so Maisri was right about that.

Brian goes to see his ‘brother’

At the start of the episode, Julia admits to Brian that this child is not going to be his brother. However, she chose to sleep with Simon because she needed to keep her child with her husband safe. It’s clear that Brian isn’t going to share Julia’s secrets, even if he is angry that Julia lied to him for so long.

As Brian forces Simon out of the room as he tries to hit Davina, he ends up with a whipping of his own. This all comes off the back of Brian wanting to know what he can do to make Simon be proud of him, and it turns out that Simon wants Brian to stand for that will help the family. Standing up for his mom was not on the list of things.

After all this, Brian goes to see Julia and his ‘brother,’ as he keeps up the pretence. He’s going to protect Julia and this baby, and he makes it clear that Julia will find Henry. Some how.

In a bittersweet moment, Brian shares that he doesn’t know when his birthday is. Davina has never celebrated it, and he hasn’t asked about it. He blames himself for how hard Davina’s life has been, but Julia points out that he is Davina’s greatest joy. After all, she has always done what she can to protect her son, and no good mother complains about that.

Julia decides that she’s going to change things for Brian. There’s a cake in the room, so she decides to place a candle in it and gets Brian to make a wish and blow out the candle. Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 6 is able to end with a sense of hope for Brian and Julia, but it’s clear that there is a lot to work through for both of them to get to their loves.

Henry gets the most upsetting news in Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 6

We knew that Henry would receive some bad news, but the question was whether the news was real or not. After telling Arch Bug that he is going to find some midwives. It turns out that all this time, he’s known that Julia is pregnant, and he knows that his baby is due any time now.

Arch shares that he knows the loss of a child. His son was stillborn, and it nearly took his wife, Murdina, from him. Finally, we see a sense of humanity and compassion in this man, but that’s not to last, right? He does share that Isaac Grant can get women to come to Castle Grant to say if they’ve helped deliver a baby.

After a few false starts, Henry finds out from a woman that a Julia Beauchamp was taken in by a crofter and his wife and she was there for the birth of the baby. However, both mother and child died, and she says that they were buried in a pauper’s grave and she doesn’t know where.

Naturally, Henry doesn’t want to believe it at first. We find out that it’s not true at all. Of course, as soon as the woman mentions the crofter, we know that it’s a story. Arch and Isaac have created it so that Henry stops searching for Julia.

As Henry accepts it, he goes back into his memories. He remembers the end of World War I, rushing straight to Julia to tell him. This is taken from the clip from the trailer, so it turns out that Henry doesn’t travel to post-World War II and it was an editing/filming error. It could also be that Henry’s memory is faulty, as we see that Henry has run to the woman at the brothel, but he is imagining his Julia in 1918.

The prostitute realizes what is going on, and she plays along, even taking him to her bed. It’s a heartbreaking moment as we realize just how deep in his grief Henry is. What will happen when he breaks through it? Will he break through it?

What a way to end an episode that started with some hope. Just as we thought that maybe Julia and Henry could be reunited, it seems like everything is lost.
