This is great news for fans, especially since the streamer just recently canceled Etoile after just one season despite initially gaining a two-season order. However, reading between the lines, it looks like we need to prepare for the end.
Maxton Hall – The World Between Us season 3 is based on Save Us
According to Deadline, Maxton Hall – The World Between Us season 3 will be based on the novel Save Us, which is the third book in Mona Kasten’s series. It’s a trilogy series, which means it’s the last book, and therefore, this is likely to be the last season.
Amazon has precedence of doing this in the past. The Summer I Turned Pretty was based on a three-book series, and sure enough, the third season has been revealed as the final season. However, when The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 was initially announced, there was no word on it being the final season. It was only after the release of the poster and teaser trailer that fans got the confirmation that the third season would be the last.
That’s likely what Amazon will do here. At least with the renewal, it means we know the whole of Ruby and James’s love story will reach the end that Kasten intended.
Why ending with Maxton Hall season 3 is a good thing
It’s a smart move for Amazon to end the series. There have been many shows that moved past the source material in the past, and not with the best results. Just look at how Game of Thrones fans don’t like the sixth, seventh, and eighth seasons of that series as much as the first five, which were based on the books by George R.R. Martin. There are concerns that Outlander season 8 won’t capture the same magic as earlier seasons because there isn’t the 10th and final book available to help finalize the story.
That’s just from stories that have continued when there are clearly more books to come but not available yet. What about when shows have moved past the source material? As shows do that, new characters that were never met before need to be added, and fresh storylines need to be completed. The book-first fans don’t necessarily want that, leading to a decline in viewership and then an abrupt cancellation.
It’s best to follow the story set out and end the show where the books end. Amazon is doing the right thing with Maxton Hall – The World Between Us.
