Lord John Grey is not a suspicious man, and we get that reminder in A Plague of Zombies Section 6. Let’s get into the breakdown of the chapter.

This chapter sees Lord John Grey realize that there is a threat. He doesn’t think that it’s actual zombies, but he does take the threat against the governor seriously. That means there’s a potential threat to him.

Sure enough, that threat comes up, and there is a smell of decay.

Breaking down A Plague of Zombies Section 6

The section starts with Lord John Grey reflecting on what he’s been told about zombies so far. He thinks about all the different superstitions around the world where he’s been stationed. Each country has its own set of superstitions, and I love that while he doesn’t believe them, he is still somewhat respectful of them.

John does take the threat seriously, though. He decides to call in the soldiers and tells them all to stand guard. There is the chance of an attack tonight, and John wants to be ready for it. He even gets a sleeping servant to take him to the governor’s quarters, where he can hear snoring. So, it’s important to stand guard over the governor tonight.

When John goes back to his room, he is attacked by something or someone. There is a strong smell of decay. John is able to save himself and hits the creatures with a bench to get himself free. The creature runs off, leaving behind some blood and the smell of a dead creature. What is going on? This is something John needs to figure out.

Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?

If A Plague of Zombies was used in an adaptation, we would need to see this chapter play out. It’s so important because it is the big attack on John. This sets up the story of the “zombies.”

It would be hard to show the internalized thoughts of other superstitions. The best way around this would be to have Tom in the room maybe getting John ready for bed. The two can talk this out, with John mentioning some of the other superstitions he’s heard of around the world.

Then we can see John make the decision to protect the governor and the attack happen on him. This pushes the story forward, so it needs to happen. There is no doubt about that.
