If you’re looking for a period drama that’s more like The Last Kingdom or Vikings, then you’ll want to turn to Netflix. Last Samurai Standing brings a story of the past, but it adds a Battle Royale feel to it at the same time.
Last Samurai Standing is a foreign-language series, as the promo makes very clear. It’s a Japanese original series, adding more authenticity to the story than previous stories that are focused on the Samurai period.
It’s also adapted from the Japanese manga series of the same name. Considering the success of some of the latest live adaptation developments, this is certainly something to be excited about. And the trailer certainly looks epic.
When will Last Samurai Standing come to Netflix?
The new Netflix series will be on Netflix before you know it. Get Thursday, Nov. 13 in your diary, with all six episodes dropping at once for viewers to enjoy. The first two episodes have already been viewed at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, showing just how much the producers and Netflix are standing behind this.
With just six episodes, it’s sure to be an easy binge-watch. Then it’s a case of whether there will be a second season or not, because this isn’t billed as a limited series.
What is Last Samurai Standing about?
The series is set in the late 19th century during the Meiji era in Japan. A total of 292 fighters have come to Kyoto’s Tenryū-ji Temple after sunset for the chance to win a major prize that is sure to help them survive and thrive in the world.
There can only be one warrior, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone has to die. The challenge is simple: be the first one to have all the wooden tags of other fighters. Of course, they’re all fighters, and they will fight to the death if they need to. Some of them will do it just for sport.
It’s a bloody and dangerous competition, and some are there out of desperation. Shujiro Saga is one of those men, there to win the ¥100 billion to help his sick wife and child.

The series is made up of a local cast, which will make many people happy to hear. Junichi Okada takes on the role of Shujiro Saga, who has a heart as well as a need to win the money.
