With so many period dramas in the works, there’s no doubt that a few have dropped off the radar. Then, as you start looking at the shows we were hoping to see soon, you remember them. 1944, the Yellowstone spinoff set in the year mentioned, is certainly one of them.
Back in 2023, Paramount announced that the Yellowstone world would continue to grow. Initially, this was with the period drama 1944 and the modern-day follow-up The Madison. Then there was the addition of Y: Marshals and The Dutton Ranch. So far, only one of those shows has landed a production order and premiere date, and it’s not 1944.

Is 1944 still happening on Paramount+?
As of right now, the series is still in the works. This is a case of no news is good news. However, there is a disappointing update in that Taylor Sheridan, who is the creator of the Yellowstone universe, is moving from Paramount to NBCUniversal once his current deal comes to an end. That isn’t until 2029, so there is still time to create 1944, but it could put some pressure on him.
With Paramount being the one to already confirm the series, it is likely going to stick with that streamer. After all, that’s where all other Yellowstone shows are, and these deals don’t just move because of an overall deal expiring. It’s just a matter of whether there is time and interest from all parties now, as the shows can also be canceled.

What is 1944 going to be about?
While there’s been no confirmation on the focus, we know that it’s going to be a generation of the Dutton family. The most obvious generation would be John Dutton II, who was born in 1923. We could even see his father, Spencer, who we know lived for more than 40 years after the events of the second season.
With the series being just 15 years before Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III is born, it makes John Dutton II his grandfather, and we could see the beginning of a romance or the setup of something that allows for the birth of the patriarch from Yellowstone.
We’re likely to see how the people of the ranch deal with the Second World War, which will be in full swing but coming closer to an end by the year 1944. As of now, we can still believe that it’s happening, and considering it took two years between the first two seasons of 1923, we know that it could just be a matter of time to get it all just right.
1944 is likely to air on Paramount+, where you can watch 1883, 1923, and Yellowstone.
