For the last six weeks, we’ve watched how Thomas Cromwell’s story ends. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light got us up to his execution, which there was no escape from once Henry VIII has set his mind.

There isn’t a new episode of the series on tonight, Sunday, May 4. As much as we know there is more to the stories of Henry VIII, the Duke of Norfolk, and more, we’re not going to see them play out. The last episode was the series finale.

Wolf Hall was all about Thomas Cromwell

We have to remember that Wolf Hall was based on the trilogy of books by Hilary Mantel. She told the story of Thomas Cromwell’s rise and fall in the time of Henry VIII. That meant covering some of Henry VIII’s life with some of his six wives. However, Cromwell didn’t make it to the end of Henry’s reign, so we knew that the story would end before we got to Catherine Parr.

With Mantel’s novels ending with Cromwell’s death, there is no source material to continue the story. Mantel passed away in 2022, so there are no chances of other stories from other points of view. After all, there are many more who face losing their heads, including another Queen Consort of England.

There won’t be a Wolf Hall season 3

At the same time, we’re not expecting to see a third season of the series. Again, this is about Cromwell’s life, and that life has come to an end.

The series was also an expensive one to film, with the second season almost not happening. It was difficult to keep it in budget, with actors agreeing to take pay cuts. With the budget issues already apparent with the second season, it’s unlikely that the UK networks would want to risk a third season and the costs involved, even if there was more story to tell.

This is a two-part series, covering the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell. If you want to see what comes next, there are many shows focused on the six wives of Henry VIII, including The Tudors and The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

Wolf Hall is available to stream on PBS.org.
