As soon as Henry and Julia were back together in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale, they headed to Craigh na Dun. It seemed like the best choice, knowing that this was why they ended up in the past in the first place.

It was only once they got there that Julia brought up the possibility of William not being able to travel through time. What if he doesn’t have the ability like the two of them? Neither of them even considered it until they got there, and once they got there, they were running out of time.

Henry and Julia don’t understand the rules of time travel in Outlander: Blood of My Blood

When speaking with claireandjamie.com, Jeremy Irvine pointed out that Henry did something that many men would do. He focused on getting himself and Julia to the stones. This was where they had come through time, so that had to be the way back home. He didn’t really think of what to do once he got there, but just getting there.

And it’s true. It’s not just men. Some people will just think of the destination and not what happens at the destination. It’s not just time travel, either. I say it all the time about revolutions. People think of tearing down an establishment, but they don’t think of the aftermath and what comes with a new government or establishment.

Henry and Julia have no idea how time travel works. In their defense, very few people have understood the rules of time travel. Claire only learned about it because she took the time to learn after finding out that Jamie had survived Culloden. She realized Geillis was going back in time, and that was when she read everything Geillis believed about time travel. From there, Claire, Brianna, and Roger started to understand more.

Henry and Julia haven’t had that chance, so they have no idea that gems are needed to help steer when traveling through the stones. Why would Henry then stop to think about William even being able to travel when he had no idea what the rules were—or even that not everyone can travel through time?

Henry has to take a chance that William can travel

In the end, Henry has to take a chance. Arch Bug is coming up the hill, and there is no way that Henry will allow his wife and child to be hurt by them. He would rather protect them, and that means acting fast.

He just has to hope that William can travel through time. What he doesn’t realize is that he also has to hope that Julia can keep tight hold of William as she goes through the stones with him. Then he has to figure out what he’s going to do when it comes to Arch Bug catching up to them.

Henry was in the moment as he focused on getting Julia and William to the stones in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1 finale. It makes sense that he didn’t think the whole thing through.
