When we first heard the Outlander story, we learned that Ellen MacKenzie was supposed to marry Malcolm Grant. Instead, she ran off with Brian Fraser, and Malcolm seemed to hold a grudge. In Outlander: Blood of My Blood, we get more to the story, and it’s hard not to feel for Malcolm.

It was always hard to understand the circumstances of Ellen and Malcolm’s proposed union in the world of Outlander. After all, the story came via third parties, and we never heard of it from either Ellen and Brian, as both are dead by the time Claire meets Jamie in the Outlander series premiere.

The Malcolm we hear about is rather bitter and mean, and so, we could see why Ellen wouldn’t want to marry a man like that. The Malcolm we’ve come to know in Outlander: Blood of My Blood is nothing like that.

Malcolm Grant genuinely wants to be with Ellen in Outlander: Blood of My Blood

It’s been clear from the start that for Malcolm, this is a marriage of want and love. It’s not one of joining two clans together. Ellen is a woman he has liked from being a child, and he genuinely wants to be with her for who she is.

He cares about her as well. He wants her to know that he had nothing to do with the purity test, which shows that he trusted her from the start.

Sure, men can hide their true intentions. If you watched the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, you know that switch that can happen after marriage. Maybe that would have happened in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, but there is no sign that Malcolm is anything but the genuine good man that he is.

So, it makes it hard to not feel for him when you know what is to come. We all know that Ellen is going to run off with Brian, and that’s sure to hit Malcolm where it hurts. He’s lost the woman that he wants to be with, and that type of rejection isn’t always easy to deal with.

Malcolm becoming a bitter man makes sense

We know that the Grants and MacKenzies never really became the best of friends after that. While Dougal does end up marrying a Grant, it’s clear that there are issues with the way things played out with Ellen. Considering how much Malcolm wanted to be with Ellen, it’s not surprising that he turned out to be bitter and not really want to be around Jamie Fraser.

Maybe things could have been different had Henry stuck around. It’s clear that Henry is going to go after Julia, and the two are likely going to flee where they have ended up, even potentially going through the stones. However, Henry became somewhat of an ally to Malcolm, and it’s possible that Henry could have helped Malcolm see the rejection a little differently.
