Don't expect more 1923 on Paramount+ (but this isn't necessarily a bad thing)

The Yellowstone universe has continued to grow with various spinoffs, and 1923 certainly attracted the attention of period drama fans. The series took two years between the first and second season, with 1923 premiering in February 2025.

Of course, with a series taking so long between seasons, it’s normal to wonder if we should prepare for more in the coming months. When it comes to this Yellowstone spinoff, the answer is no.

1923 was always envisioned as two seasons

The prequel series was always envisioned to be a two-season series. A sequel to 1883, it picks up with Harrison Ford’s Jacob Dutton, the brother of Tim McGraw’s James Dutton from the previous prequel series. Over the course of the two seasons, we follow the highs and heartbreaking lows for the Dutton family, as the fight to be reunited with lost loves and figure out a way to protect their ranch from the oncoming war.

There are certainly questions about what happens after the events of the 1923 season 2 finale, but there were never plans to create a third season. However, there are plans to tell more stories to catch the timeline up to Yellowstone, with a 1944 series potentially in the works.

The Yellowstone shows are great standalone tales that combine as one

When it comes to the Yellowstone sequels, it’s important to watch them all. However, you don’t necessarily need to watch them in order of years or even in order that they were released. They don’t rely on you knowing anything about the previous shows, as what you need to know is mentioned in the tale. In fact, 1883 starts it all off, with Easter eggs to connect to the future.

There’s a chance that Spencer Dutton and his son John Dutton will be the main focus of 1944. So, you’ll probably want to catch up on 1923 to understand that. However, this is a great example of how standalone anthologies can work out. We get to see individual family journeys. After all, it’s not like we get to know what all our ancestors went through over the course of the generations.

There’s a poignant line in 1883 as Elsa Dutton shares that she’s afraid of being forgotten. It’s a fear for many, but it happens, even in the Dutton family.

1923 is available to stream on Paramount+, and you can get invested knowing that the season 2 finale was the intended end.
