As with any prequel, younger versions of various characters we’ve come to know are sure to pop up now and then. Outlander: Blood of My Blood has been no different, and the fifth hour of the series brought us a younger version of Maisri.
Of course, Simon Fraser was going to get his Seer to tell him about the child Julia is carrying. That did mean that Julia was trapped at Castle Leathers for a little longer, and now she may regret setting up a plan to protect her child when she could have had Brian get her out.
Meanwhile, Brian makes it to Craigh na Dun for the Beltane Festival, which is where Ellen and Henry both are. Oh, the what ifs had Julia made it there. For now, we take a look back at Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 5 for the best moments.

Davina stirring the pot at Castle Leathers
As Davina realized that Brian was going to get Julia out of Castle Leathers, she decided to throw a spanner in the works. She told Brian that the baby Julia is carrying is Simon’s child. Of course, this meant that Brian changed his mind about taking Julia with him. He knows what would happen if he did.
I do love the meddling of Davina. I’m sure a lot of people don’t, but this creates drama, and it’s something different to everything else that is going on. Davina surely feels threatened, but at the same time, she wants to protect Simon.

Young Maisri coming to Castle Leathers in Outlander: Blood of My Blood
I appreciated seeing that the Outlander writers remembered about Young Maisri. We know in Outlander that Simon Fraser is superstitious. He believes that Maisri has the Sight, and he’s listened to her over the years. Now we get to see that in practice.
Davina is right in that Maisri doesn’t tell Simon that the child is explicitly his. She may know that Julia is taking action to survive, but this could also be a limit of her Sight. We don’t know a lot about Maisri, and I appreciate the continued mystery around her.

Ellen finding a way to avoid Malcolm
While at the Beltane Festival, Ellen has no choice but to speak with Malcolm Grant. In fact, she has to spend time with him considering they are betrothed now. That doesn’t mean she wants to, and she finds a smart way to give her time to meet with Brian in secret. She shares what she likes in a man, and of course, he wants to be that man for her. I actually have to wonder if Malcolm actually likes Ellen.
This does lead to a wonderful couple moment. Ellen and Brian are able to get handfasted in secret, but that’s sure to lead to problems later on.

Jocasta shares her animosity toward Ellen in Blood of My Blood
We’ve seen that Jocasta doesn’t really like her elder sister, and it’s always come across as jealousy. That’s not the case, though. Throughout this episode, we get to know a little more about Jocasta, such as she blames Ellen for being married to “an old coot.”
It turns out that Ellen did play a part in marrying Jocasta off to John Cameron. However, she suggested the best of the worst out of marriage prospects. It doesn’t change everything between the sisters, but there is a little bit of hope. Or there would be if we didn’t know what was coming.

Ned opens up to Henry in the Outlander prequel
The end of the episode sees Ned and Henry talking as they watch the Beltane festival take place. Henry is losing hope of finding Julia, but he won’t give up just yet. Ned worries that it will be the death of Henry, and maybe it will.
However, Ned does understand why Henry continues to search. He has felt this love once before, and we get a beautiful moment of Ned opening up to Henry, showing us how this friendship has developed over the months that Henry has been in the past. I hope to see more of this as the story continues, because it’s been a great way to flesh out Ned Gowan a lot more.
