Outlander season 7, episode 12 brought us the reunion we needed. It’s time to look back at the episode to find Claire’s best moments.
We are at a difficult point in the story for a lot of fans. Jamie was presumed dead, leading to a snap marriage between Lord John Grey and Claire to protect Claire from being arrested as a spy. Well, Jamie wasn’t dead at all, and now things they did have come up.
Meanwhile, the secret about Jamie being William’s dad is out. That brought an explosive moment that Claire had to deal with.
Claire explains what she can to William
I do wish that the series had built up the bond between Claire and William a little better in the series. In the books, the two spend some time together and get to know each other. Having William turn to Claire in the show was a little jarring at first. However, it was a great moment.
Claire was empathetic. She has been through this before, with Brianna learning the truth about Jamie and Frank. She knows how that Fraser temper can be, but she also understands that hiding this information isn’t always the best option. It’s not like she had a choice, though.
So, she was kind to him. She shared what she could, and she was diplomatic in some of her answers. She was a stepmother to him, and a kind one at that.
Caring about what happened to Lord John Grey
When Jamie returned without John, she wanted to know what had happened. Of course, there were a few other things to sort out at the time. Claire had to be honest with Jamie about what happened with John. While she felt somewhat guilty for what she did, she knows that John didn’t deserve the beating that he did end up getting.
So, it’s not surprising that she cared about where John was. She knows Jamie well enough to know that he wouldn’t outright kill him, but has John been left for dead? Being able to care for him with all this going on shows just how these relationships have adapted over the seasons. If this was season 3 Claire, she wouldn’t have cared much about Lord John Grey.
Making it clear she is Jamie’s wife
The reunion at the very end of the episode was everything. Something that stood out to me was the way Claire made it clear that she is Jamie’s wife. There is no doubt about that in her head or in her heart.
Jamie wants to take control in the moment. He feels like he’s the wronged party, and she does understand that. It doesn’t mean she has to accept it. At the same time, she’s able to give Jamie exactly what he needs. That passionate reminder that she is still his despite everything.
