With the destruction in his room, there’s no way for Lord John Grey not to tell Tom the truth in A Plague of Zombies Section 7. It’s also clear that an investigation is needed.

I love how we see John and Tom interact together. John does try to protect his valet from issues, and he doesn’t want to tell him everything. However, he respects Tom and he knows how smart Tom is. There’s no way to explain the destruction in the room without the truth.

We also get the reminder that the “help” can sometimes be the best people to get answers.

Breaking down A Plague of Zombies Section 7

We start off with John realizing that he needs to tell Fettes, Cherry, and Tom. Fettes and Cherry need to know because of the attack on John and the potential initial plan to attack the governor. Tom needs to know because John can’t explain the destruction in the room.

The three officers deduce that the attack on John was likely because John moved the guards. He made it impossible for the attack on the governor, so the attacker needed to get rid of John. The best way to do that was to make the attack happen in his room. This does intensify the idea that the governor was the intended victim.

John, Fettes, and Cherry will need to investigate this. They need to head out to the nearest plantations to figure out what’s going on. Cherry also agrees to increase the guards.

As for Tom, well, John tells him the truth. I love that we see Tom leave a protection charm in John’s room. Remember that John isn’t superstitious, but he has respect for those who are. He respects Tom’s charm and he leaves it, despite not thinking that it will help.

Tom will be able to help, though. He can talk to the servants, including Rodrigo, to get more information about threats against the governor and zombies.

Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?

I would want to see this chapter adapted if A Plague of Zombies was used. There’s so much about it that is needed for the story, and not just the fact that is plays a part in the actual major storyline going on. We need to see anything that is important for the plot!

This chapter gives us a look at Tom and John’s relationship. There is this platonic love between them. Tom will do what he can to protect John, even if that means a protection charm. John respects Tom not to lie to him and accept the charm. We need to see these types of relationships, especially when it comes to employer and employee.
