Lord John Grey, Tom, and Rodrigo head out to meet with the maroons in A Plague of Zombies Section 18. It leads to John experiencing maroon hospitality, and not in a good way.

It takes two days to get to the maroons. This gives us an idea of how far out John is. So, when it comes to the end of the chapter, we are worried for him. We’re also worried for Tom and Rodrigo.

We also get a sense of maroon life and the way they communicate. This is important to understand the sort of situation John will end up going into.

Breaking down A Plague of Zombies Section 18

The chapter starts with us learning that John, Tom, and Rodrigo have been riding for two days. They are on their way to see Captain Accompong. Rodrigo explains that the horns that they keep hearing are linked to the maroons. It’s a way for them all to communicate, and each tribe will have a different horn.

This is a great way to understand the life of the maroons. It’s a chance to see how they are very much like the Highlanders in a way. John should have a little knowledge on handling some of this.

However, when they camp for the night, things take a turn. John wakes to nothing around him at all. Tom and Rodrigo are gone, but the blankets they were sleeping with are thrown into the bushes. John has been left with some boots to put on. What is clear is the maroons knew they were coming, and now they are luring John into something. The question is what.

Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?

There is no way not to include this chapter. It brings us some suspense to the story, and there’s been little of this in A Plague of Zombies. We are getting close to the end of the story, so it makes sense to add some suspense now.

We need to see John on his own, and we need to see how he’s able to manage it all. He has to think on his feet again, and he doesn’t have any sort of backup. Of course, he’ll also be worried about Tom and Rodrigo considering they’ve been taken by the maroons.
