Outlander Book Club: A Plague of Zombies Section 17 breakdown
Not everyone is happy with Lord John Grey’s plans in A Plague of Zombies Section 17. However, John isn’t changing anything.
Major Fettes isn’t happy with the idea of Lord John Grey heading up to see the maroons alone. John does have a good reason for it, but part of him knows that this could turn dangerous. It’s not like Fettes doesn’t have something to do, though.
This is another short chapter that continues to push the plot of the story together. Let’s get into the details.
Breaking down A Plague of Zombies Section 17
Major Fettes isn’t happy that Lord John Grey isn’t going to take soldiers with him to see Captain Accompong. This could lead to danger because the maroons could attack and John wouldn’t be able to defend himself well. However, John notes that taking soldiers would invite war.
Instead, John will take just Tom and Rodrigo. This would open a discussion, and it would mean John had a translator with him to help communicate.
There is something that Fettes can do though to help. He needs to find a fancy hat that is preferably laced in gold. John doesn’t explain why, but we can work out what’s going on. This isn’t to make Fettes stand out as the new governor. The maroons will expect an exchange of gifts to show that John is coming in peace.
Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?
This is another chapter that would need to be used if there was an adaptation of A Plague of Zombies. It pushes the plot forward, and it gives us a look at how John already knows the maroons and how to manage the situation. I also think it would be great to see how John tells Fettes to get a hat. It seems like the most random thing to buy.
This is also a needed chapter to explain why John is going with just Tom and Rodrigo. We need to see the way he thinks and understands situations.
