While Lord John Grey initially thinks about heading back to Spanish Town in A Plague of Zombies Section 10, he decides to head in another direction. He needs to go to Rose Hall.
John continually strikes me as a man who can’t leave a stone unturned. When he hears about something, he needs to investigate right away. Otherwise it plays on his mind. It’s not surprising then that he decides to head to Rose Hall instead of back to Spanish Town.
Breaking down A Plague of Zombies Section 10
The chapter starts with Lord John Grey and his troops leaving the Twelvetrees plantation. However, he doesn’t head back to Spanish Town as he originally intended. He leaves some troops orders to protect the plantation and he decides to head to Rose Hall with some of the others.
While they camp by Rose Hall that night, they hear the sound of horns at sunset. John is sure that it’s an attack, and he readies the men. It turns out to be an uneventful night, though.
This is clear foreshadowing of the dangers to come. There is something going on at Rose Hall. We all have an idea based on Voyager, but John has never met Geillis Duncan. He wouldn’t have even heard about her. Oh how I would now love for John and Claire to have a conversation about her!
Back to the story, though. The morning arrives and John heads in the direction to Rose Hall. It’s clear that we’ll get to meet Mrs. Abernathy.
Could this chapter be used in a TV series adaptation?
This chapter would need to be used in an adaptation, and potentially in full. It’s not like it’s a big chapter, so there’s no reason to use “lack of time” as a reason not to use it.
First of all, we need to see John head to Rose Hall. I’d love to see him pull out the map and calculate the distance. Second of all, we need to see that there is a threat around them. While it turned out to be nothing, we could do with the anticipation as we head to Rose Hall. Especially for those who haven’t seen Mrs. Abernathy in Outlander or those who haven’t realized exactly who John is going to be dealing with.
