Captain Frank Randall explains the mission to Jerry in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 3. It’s not all the details, but enough to get an understanding of why he is going to Northumbria. After all, we know that Northumbria is an important location in Jerry’s story.
It turns out that this is a surveillance mission. Jerry needs to fly north for training first. The good thing about all of this is that he’ll get to go home to see his wife and son, though.
Breaking down A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 3
Frank explains that the mission is one that involves secrecy and danger. However, before he goes into too many details, he wants to make sure that Jerry is fit to fly. It turns out that Jerry took two shots to the knee a year before, and he was on the “sick and injured” list for two months while he recovered. Nine months after his leave, Roger was born, so we all know what Jerry and Marjorie were up to!
Jerry is fit to fly, and this means Frank can go into more details. Jerry will need to go to Northumbria to learn how to use cameras. These cameras will be placed on the Spitfire, and after that, all Jerry knows is that he’ll be sent to Eastern Europe. It’s clear that this is a surveillance mission; otherwise, why would the cameras be needed.
So, Jerry will need to fly over enemy territory. It makes sense why so many people turned down the mission, and Jerry considers doing that as well. If only Jerry knew what we know, and maybe he would have turned down the mission. However, he signed up to the RAF to protect his country, and this is his chance to do that. He is a true soldier.
Could this section be adapted for a TV series?
Yes, I would expect this section to be used if A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows was ever used in an adaptation. It’s needed for the main part of the story, as we get to find out what the mission is. There is much more to just a flight to Northumbria, and it makes the entire situation sound more dangerous.
There’s also a little bit of a backstory about how Roger came to be. He wasn’t planned, and had Jerry not been injured before, Roger wouldn’t have happened. I’d love for this to be included in a series adaptation in some sort of way.
