We finally learn how Frank Randall knew so much about Jerry MacKenzie in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows. It turns out that Frank had sent Jerry on a mission.
While it seems like finding the fuel pump issue is a blessing in disguise, it’s actually what sets up for Jerry ending up near a stone circle in Northumbria. This section certainly had me questioning what more Frank knew at this point, or whether this was the point that made him interested in stone circles when he was with Claire.
Breaking down A Leaf on the Winds of All Hallows section 2
After his shower, Jerry finds out that Group Captain Malan wants to speak with him. As Jerry heads out to see his captain, he comes across another man, dressed in a British Army uniform. It turns out that this is Captain Frank Randall, who has a special mission for Jerry as nobody else has volunteered for it. Well, it looks like Jerry is being “voluntold” for it.
Jerry learns that Randall is MI6, and it’s clear that this could be a dangerous mission. However, part of his mind is on the rest of his group and his Spitfire, Dolly. It makes sense that he has his mind on that, as by bring pulled in for another mission means that he can’t help them with the planned mission that was supposed to go ahead.
I do have to wonder what Frank knows about stone circles at this point. I always got the sense that he didn’t really know about their power, and that the mission was just genuinely a dangerous one for the war. It seemed like Claire going missing was the point he was willing to believe that there was something about the stone circles. I really need a Frank book.
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
There’s no way around using this chapter if A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows was used. The issue would be getting Tobias Menzies to reprise his role as Frank. This could be plausible if it was just for a short space of time, as I’m sure if the schedules allowed, Menzies would be interested in it.
It’s an important scene, as it sets up the reason Jerry ends up going missing. We need to see what that mission is, and we need to see how Frank connects to it, as it connects to so much more, including Reverend Wakefield and Claire going missing through the stones.
