After finding out that the world thinks he’s dead, Jerry focuses on getting back to Dolly and Roger in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 17. He just needs to find a way to get someone to give him the fare for the tube.
This section inches us closer and closer to the end that we know is coming. Remember that Roger doesn’t have any memories of his dad, and it’s not because Jerry didn’t make it back to London. It’s because Jerry had to get to London for a particularly important moment.
Breaking down A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 17
Hearing that you’re supposed to be dead is going to put everyone in a bit of a spin. Jerry realizes that time has passed, and he has no idea what’s happened. Not only is he shocked, but he’s angry, and he says “the f**k I am” over and over again as he heads to his wife and son. It’s not quite as quiet as he thought it was, because a woman is shocked and runs to a policeman.
Jerry does come across as being a drunk. He looks worse for wear, and it’s not like he has his military ID on him. The guy doesn’t just look like a drunk, but like he has gone AWOL from the war. It’s not surprising that he has to worry about being picked up by the cops.
So, he straightens up and walks with purpose past the policeman. The guy has absolutely no idea what to do, so he just watched Jerry walk past.
Jerry has realized that he needs to get to the Tube. That’s the quickest way to get to Bethnal Green, and all I can think of is what’s to come for Jerry as he gets there. And as much as I wish I could say stop, I know that he has to do this to save Roger. History has already been written.
Could this section be used in a TV show adaptation?
This section would need to be used if there was an adaptation of A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows. We’d need to see how he reacts after finding out that he is supposed to be dead. On top of that, we’d need to see him work his way to Dolly and Roger.
There is already so much that we don’t know but we do at the same time. We know Jerry is dead in Roger’s timeline, but we don’t know why. All of this leads up to it, making it an important part of the story. Our choices have consequences, but they’re not always bad consequences.
