Jerry makes it back to London in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 16, but everything looks different to the way it once did. His house is gone, and he fears that Dolly and Roger are as well.
Of course, we know where Dolly is, and I’m glad that we got a section that told us that Dolly was now living with her mom. However, I do wish that Jerry had worked out that Roger was the man who sent him back to his wife and child, because then he’d have had faith that something good came out of all of this.
Breaking down A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 16
The section starts with Jerry making it back to London. He doesn’t take much in, except for a sign that says “Unexploded Bomb.” It’s clear that London has been hit badly during the War, but Jerry still doesn’t seem to realize that it’s been a couple of years since he went through the stones. He doesn’t remember much of the journey to get to London.
When he finally reaches his home, he is shocked to find it is now rubble. Naturally, he fears the worse for Dolly and Roger, but that’s when the man who runs the corner shop comes out to find him. He is shocked to see Jerry, but he quickly makes it clear that Dolly and Roger are alive. They are in Bethnal Green with Dolly’s mom.
Jerry is surprised to hear this at first. Again, he has no idea how long he has actually be gone. I don’t even think I know how long he’s actually been gone, because I swear it feels like this story took just days, but for Roger and Buck to get to Jerry in the past, it had to have taken months!
Anyway, back to the current situation. The corner shop man suddenly realizes that Dolly and Roger left because Jerry wasn’t there to support them. Jerry was supposed to be dead, and now this man realizes that he’s looking at a ghost. It’s time for Jerry to find out a lot more of what happened while he was stuck in the past.
Could this section be used in a TV show adaptation?
If A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows was adapted, we would need to see this. I’d like to see some time spent on showing London during the Blitz. The city was hit terribly, and yet the people powered through. They got on with things because they had to, but those who could did get out of the main part of the city.
I’d also love to see Jerry’s face as he hears that he’s supposed to be dead. A good actor will tell us everything that he is thinking as he hears that. It means that Dolly has mourned him, and he has no idea how long it’s been or what he’s walking into when he goes to find Dolly. I’d love to see a Jerry and Dolly miniseries with all this in mind.
