We’re still with Jerry in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 13, and now he has become a prisoner. This is a big chapter, though, as we get to see the events of Written in My Own Heart’s Blood from Jerry’s point of view.
We know the two men who come and get him in this section. They are Roger and Buck, and this catches us up with what we already know about Jerry MacKenzie.
Breaking down A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 13
The section starts with Jerry in a barn. He is locked in there, and is now a prisoner. All he can think of is the POWs in the War. This leads to him thinking about the mission that got him here, and that thought makes him think of Dolly and the gem that she left him with. There is just a small remnant of the sapphire, and that makes him wonder what could be powerful enough to burn the stone but not himself.
This is a point where Jerry has accepted that something magical has happened to him. He wants to understand it, but he can’t. However, the thoughts of his home and his son, Roger, help him get some sleep.
He’s awoken to two men arguing, and they come into the barn. It’s clear they’re not a threat, although Jerry is apprehensive about them at first. Yet, they talk about coming from a different time period, and they share that they know what’s happened to Jerry. They go into his dog tags that they’ve found, and how they ended up on a journey to find Jerry. Roger and Buck have found him.
I was sure that this took a lot longer than it seemed in this section for Roger and Buck to find Jerry. I feel like there’s a lot of Jerry’s time in the past that we’re missing. After all, this section catches us up to the point in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, as Jerry gets back to the stones. It turns out that he heard Roger say “I love you” to him, and he even heard him respond to Buck, “It’s the only chance I’ll ever have.”
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
This section of A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows would need to be heavily adapted to work in a TV series adaptation. After all, Outlander season 7 changed where Roger and Buck found Jerry. He hadn’t become a prisoner of some Northumbrian highlanders. Instead, he was somewhere else in Scotland, and he was still hanging around the area of the stones.
So, we’d need to see how Jerry got from the man in the previous section to that point in the TV show adaptation. From there, we can get to the point of Jerry hearing Roger say “I love you.” That is the most important part of this section that is required.
