While previously, we’ve switched between Minnie and Hal, we stick with Minnie’s story in A Fugitive Green chapter 6. It’s clear how the storylines are about to crossover into one, though.
Before we can get into Minnie and Hal meeting, we need to see how she ends up in the same social circle. After all, Minnie isn’t from here, but it looks like she’s starting to gain some sort of reputation.
At the same time, she continues her hunt for her mother. While she doesn’t quite get what she wants, she does gain some information that could help her.
Breaking down A Fugitive Green chapter 6
The chapter starts with Minnie waiting for Mrs. Simpson to come to see her. It turns out that Minnie arranged for Mrs. Simpson to come to her, because she was sure that going to see the woman would mean an instant refusal. She’s desperate to know more about her birth mother, and can you really blame her? Don’t we all want to know where we’ve come from?
Before Mrs. Simpson arrives, Harry Quarry does, and he has a task for Minnie. He would like Minnie to get into Esme’s social circle to prove that Esme was having an affair with Nathanial Twelvetrees. He seems to think that her friends would know her secrets, because it’s clear that Hal is not going to give up the letters that contain the information.
It seems that this is how Minnie and Hal will end up meeting, but we’ll need to see how it all plays out. After all, Minnie needs to get Harry out of her house before Mrs. Simpson turns up.
The second knock isn’t Mrs. Simpson, either. It’s two men who are going to take Minnie to her, and there certainly seems to be a bit of a mob boss feel to this whole interact. We get Minnie’s humor once more, as she thinks about everything terrible that could happen to her with the two men. They’re not here to hurt her, though, and they genuinely take her to an inn with Mrs. Simpson instead.
This isn’t Minnie’s mom, though. Miriam Simpson is her aunt, and she shares that her mom is called Helene. Of course, Minnie wants to be taken to see her mother. That’s why she is here.
Could this chapter be used in an adaptation?
There would be no way of getting around using this chapter if A Fugitive Green was adapted. We would need to see how Minnie ends up involved in the Esme scandal, and we also need to see that side arc playing out with Minnie’s mom.
This chapter has everything to build all this up. We can see the way Minnie is sure to end up crossing paths with Hal, but I also think we get to see a slightly gullible side to Minnie. She is too quick to accept what’s being told to her about her mom.
