We head back to Minnie’s part of the story in A Fugitive Green chapter 3, where she ends up getting some time alone. This is the first time she’s been completely alone, and she enjoys it.

However, there isn’t that much time to be alone, as her father has arranged for bodyguards. What’s amusing is that her bodyguards connect to Hal Grey in A Scottish Prisoner, and it makes it almost like fate that Hal and Minnie will end up together.

Breaking down A Fugitive Green chapter 3

The chapter opens with Minnie now in London, thinking about how it’s the first time she’s truly been alone. It won’t be for long, though, as her father arranged for a chaperone and two bodyguards. She does have two hours before she has to meet these people, and that gives her some time to walk around London and explore.

Of course, her spidey-senses start tingling, and she feels like she’s being followed. She hides for a while, and then she heads back to where she is staying, a place that is central to everything that she will need. That’s when two men pop out at her, and we’ve already met them in the Outlander books. We meet the Higgins twins, the same twins Hal hires in A Scottish Prisoner.

Minnie doesn’t know this yet — and I’m not sure she ever finds that out, or maybe she’s the one who gives their names to Hal — but she does come to laugh and joke with the two men. You see, they’re not just there to be her bodyguards. If she needs someone killed quietly, they can do that for her as well, and there’s some joking about the cost of murder between the three of them.

One thing that this chapter makes clear is that we’ll get a lot of humor in the novella. I always felt Minnie a little quiet in previous stories, but that’s because she was never really in the story enough to get a sense of who she is. This story allows her to shine more, and I can’t wait to get further into it.

Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation?

We would most definitely need this chapter if A Fugitive Green was ever adapted. I don’t see an adaptation happening, but we would need to see how Minnie takes to London for the first time. Plus, this is a chance to meet the Higgins twins — maybe for the first time, as it could be adapted before A Scottish Prisoner due to the timeline — and see just how Minnie and the Higgins twins get along.

This could likely be combined with a few things, though, as it would be a short chapter. However, it would be good to focus on how Minnie is aware of her surroundings, which makes sense since she’s a spy.
