Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Bree’s heart waking her up. Then she smells the smoke, and she needs to get Mandy (and Esmeralda, of course) out of the house. Marsali is gathering the others, with Germain making it clear that he will not allow what happened last time to happen again.

Roger and Jem fall down the ladder. Jem gets Mandy out and Bree helps Roger out. However, Roger needs to find Fergus, who is putting out the last of the embers. He shares that there have been a few things that have happened up to this point, including a bag that had a live rattlesnake, and they are all from the Loyalists.

While outside, Roger doesn’t want to draw attention too much. Fergus makes it known what he will do to the people who did it once he finds out. Nobody has a look of suspicion on their faces, though. Instead, they are shocked, and the owner of the tavern invites Marsali and the children in for breakfast. The culprits didn’t stay to watch.

Finally, the soldiers Lord John Grey promised arrive. Bree and Roger pack up the gold and whiskey in crates marked as salt fish to take to the warehouse owned by one of the Sons of Liberty. Bree has some gold sewn into her hem, but she worries that it won’t be enough to buy guns in Savannah.

Jem walks in and Bree worries that he will be a soldier in the war. Then she realizes that there are only a couple of years left and Jem won’t be old enough to fight. That settles her mind a little, but she does take the pistol from him for the journey they will all take to Savannah.
