The chapter starts with Jamie returning home. He comes home as one of the lieutenants is helping Fanny learn a song. Mrs. Cunningham kept her word to send some lieutenants to help with the chores, but it has caused some problems with Cyrus being jealous.

That night, Claire and Jamie get to catch each other up on things on their unfinished third floor of the house. Of course, there is talk on how long the third floor will take. It’s clear that this refuge will be needed soon. Both of them can feel the tension growing.

Jamie had copied the Hebrew note, and he brings up how the word ambidextrous has no repeating letters. He is sure that it’s a code for something, but he doesn’t know what. Jamie does assure Claire that the Ridge probably has enough guns but not the gunpowder. They will need to rely on Mrs. Patton for that.
